Wisconsin Duck tour
On Land & Water! First used as amphibious landing crafts during WW II. Now the restored Ducks travel over land & water on a one-hour, 8 1/2 mile tour on the Wisconsin River, Dell Creek & Lake Delton. over 4 miles of scenic wilderness trails through Fern Dell, Hop-Along Hill & Red Bird Gorge.
The Duck was a very important part of winning WWII.
It was a unique vehicle that shuttled men and material from ship to shore across deep water and go on land like a truck.
It was mostly used in Europe. The Higgins landing craft (the boat that had the front end that dropped down) was used mostly in the Pacific. The Higgins boat couldn't go on land though. The only problem with the Duck was it required frequent lubrication of the
mechanism because of sea salt corrosion. It was called the Duck because the official designation was "DUC".
